I know, I know..... you've been waiting with baited breath to find out how the vaccination went. You've hit the 'refresh' button so many times that your finger is now bruised!
Well..... let's just say.... I hate it when I'm right!
I told Quinn in the morning that he would be getting a shot. Now I debated long and hard about whether or not I should tell him. There are pro's to telling him ahead of time, and con's as well. I decided that if it was me, I'd want to know so I could prepare myself.
Clearly, Quinn is not like me. Upon hearing the news, he started screaming: "I DON'T WANT A NEEDLE!!! I'm not going!! You can't make meEEEEEEEEEE!!!!"
So much for preparing him.
Anyhow. I picked the boys up from school and put some Emla cream on Quinn's arm (Emla is a topical anesthetic which numbs the area, and theoretically will lessen the 'pain' of a shot). As soon as I did this, the freak out began anew. "I DON'T WANT TO GO TO THE DR!! I don't like needles!! You can't make MEEEEEEEEE!!!!"
Oh yes, this continued the entire drive to the Dr's office. (It didn't help that Aidan was laughing at him in the car while this was going on).
By the time we got to the Dr's office Quinn's face was bright red and blotchy, and he had tears and snot everywhere. The receptionist / nurse was so sweet, she took one look at him and said: "Oh, Quinn! What's wrong?"
I caught her eye and mouthed the word: "SHOT". To which she tried to hide a smile, and said: "Oh." (I had already warned them that this was not going to be pretty.)
As we went back into the office she said to me: "You know, Aidan needs a booster too."
O. M. G
I thought I was going to fall on the floor.
Aidan went as pale as a sheet and said (trembling): "Really Mummy? Do I have to?!?!"
Karma - she works in mysterious ways. I suspect this was her way of getting back at Aidan for laughing at Quinn in the car.
So now I had two stressed out, nervous kids anxiously awaiting the Dr. (Shannon was there too, observing everything. Talk about setting a great example for the little sister!)
The Dr. examined them and everything was fine. Then came the needle.
The boys were arguing about who should go first. Finally I grabbed Quinn, sat him on my lap and held him as tightly as I could. In the meantime, Quinn was screaming, crying, thrashing...... you get the picture. Dr. Tom gave him the shot, and the drama continued. He hopped around screaming and crying, and yes, his face was red and splotchy again.
"OOOOOOWWWWWWW!!!!!! It huuuurrrrrrrtttttsssss!!!!!" was what he was yelling while he danced around the room.
Next up, Aidan. I asked if he wanted to sit on me, and he said: "no". Meanwhile, he was crying and carrying on as well. OYE. Dr. Tom gave him the needle, and then Dr. Tom said: "Are you laughing?"
I'd like to think that Aidan realized how ridiculous the whole situation was, and that's why he was laughing. At least, that's what I'd like to believe.....
Finally we were done and we got the hell out of dodge. On the upside, I don't think either boy will need a shot in the near future. Thank GAWD because I'm not sure I (or the Dr and his associates) could survive it!.
