For as long as we've lived in this house, our neighbours have been awesome. On one side we have a wonderful family with three girls, and on the other side is a retired couple who play tons of tennis and maintain a garden most produce departments would be envious of.
Despite the age difference, we get along famously with the retired couple. Our kids love them because they are constantly bringing over fresh veggies (yes, my children get excited when tomatoes and Chinese broccoli come into the house) and Chris and I love chatting with them about pretty much anything and everything.
Last night Chris and I were invited over for dinner, so we headed over for what was to be one of the most memorable nights of my life. Chuck and Shirley (our neighbours) had invited three other couples over as well. The average age of everyone else was roughly...... 74. Yep - seven decades, plus four years!
One gentleman was 87. Another was 83. And the women? Well, a lady never reveals her true age, but let's just say that they were all over 70.
And I'm sure you're thinking: "What in tarnation could Tara and Chris have in common with these old geezers?"
Well.... a lot, as it turns out.
One of the woman shared my love of homes and HGTV. Two of the men were big into engineering and anything science related which made Chris' day.
And oh how we ate:
- Chinese ribs
- Coconut shrimp
- Beef and Mango stir fry
- Poached chicken with Chinese sauce
- Curried goat with potatoes
- Lobster with asparagus and mushrooms
Followed-up with peach pie and ice cream, and of course some after dinner liqueur.
It was a feast! And Shirley made it all.
The conversation ranged from the potential teacher's strike, to kids, to World War II (one of the men had actually been shipped in a boxcar to SIBERIA!!), to tennis.... .it went on and on.
It was such a change of pace from our usual lives that Chris and I just ate it all up (figuratively and literally). We laughed, we conversed, we argued... and at the end of the night we hugged each and everyone of them like they were long lost friends.
It was a truly memorable and wonderful experience. Who new a couple of thirty-somethings would have so much fun with the over seventy crowd?!?!?!
