On Having a Bum Knee

My right knee has been the bane of my existance since high school.  I've always had problems of one sort or another with it, and the darn thing just never seems to reach 100%.

To give you a bit of history on it:
- 2000, tore my ACL and had a complete ACL repair.  Was on crutches (non weight bearing) for 8 weeks, used a cane for another 4 - 5 weeks, and went through complete physio hell to get back to normal.

- 2004, cartiledge damage while playing ultimate.  Had surgery (again)

- 2011, more cartiledge damage, along with a torn miniscus (so they said) playing in a parent / kid soccer game. Had surgery in March 2012, where they discovered the miniscus wasn't torn (WTF?!?!) but they removed significant bone chips and did a general clean up.

Fast forward to almost a week ago (8 months after my third surgery for those keeping track).  I was playing volleyball and went up for a block.  When I came down I landed on my 'bad' leg ,and heard a massive "crrruuunnnnccchhh" in my knee.  It hurt like hell, but I kept playing.  When I got home my knee hurt, but it wasn't too bad.  I iced it, elevated it and hoped for the best.

Unfortunately the best didn't happen, as I woke up at 1:00a.m. with extreme pain in my knee.  By the next morning I had that baby wrapped (I'm now a pro at wrapping my knee!) and could barely walk.  I decided not to go see the Doctor because really, what's he going to do?  Recommend surgery for the fourth time?

I'm at the point now where I'm simply ticking things of my list of what I can no longer play.  Soccer? Gone.  Volleyball? Gone.

To say I'm frustrated is an understatement.  As someone who's been active her entire life, to suddenly have to say to the kids: "No, I can't play soccer with you because of my knee" is disheartening, discouraging, and just freaking annoying.  I understand that it's something I'm going to have to live with, and in the grand scheme of things a bum knee is not the end of the world.

That being said, it still sucks.
