Happy Earth Day

Yesterday was Earth Day and we celebrated by doing something that totally goes against the grain of Earth Day:  we took down three 50+ year old trees.  It was a very sad day in our household when the tree guys pulled up with all their equipment to remove the trees.

And why?  The question I'm sure you're asking.  Why did we take down these beautiful trees?  Three words:  Emerald Ash Borer.  That nasty little bugger which you've been hearing about in the news for the last few years?  Yep, it struck.  Our trees were totally fine last year.  This year?  Totally dead.  Not one new bud, no new growth NOTHING.  So, we had to pull them down.

Words can't describe it, so I'll let the photos do the talking:

Before - the three tree's in question:

During:  See that splotch waaaayyyy up in the tree?  That's the tree guy.  I think Aidan & Quinn thought he was a superhero:

They couldn't get it all done yesterday, so here is what our poor tree looked like last night:

Today:  they're all gone.  We now have ZERO shade in about 70% of our yard.  Now we need to think about things like awnings and window coverings to shield us from the sun:

This is why they are called Emerald Ash Borers - because they bore into Ash trees.  Little bastards...

That's such a shame! We have at least one casualty in our yard, but it's only 1/5 the age yours were and doesn't seem nearly as tragic. I see a whole bunch on the trail behind us that have no new buds/leaves also and am starting to wonder if there is going to be a massive loss this year.

What a wonderful yard you have. That's so sad. We had to chop down three ash trees as well five years ago--two were sickly and we knew the borer was coming anyways. I don't see a pool in the pics. If you don't have one, you could put one in like we did. It made the loss a lot easier to take!
