Well, our little corner of the world was hit by a big 'ol hurricane on Monday night.
Yep, you heard me right: hurr - i- freakin' - cane!
That storm called Hurricane Sandy (aka Frankenstorm) made it far enough inland to turn Sarnia into a hurricane zone. Monday during the day it was grey, rainy and the wind got steadily more and more gusty throughout the day. By Monday at about 9:00 the wind was whistling outside our house, where the six of us had hunkered down for the night. By midnight, the wind was absolutely HOWLING outside. Reports had windgusts up to 120 km per hour.
The power went out, and then came back on, then was back out.
As the dark cloud of night slowly pulled back to emerge the grey morning, we peeked out the window to survey the damage.
One big branch down in the backyard: check.
Shingles from the roof on the lawn: check.
Phone and internet down, but power on: check.
All in all, our house weathered the storm very well. Around town massive trees had been blown over like they were twigs. Trampolines had been picked up and unceremoniously shredded. Sheds and fences were torn apart as though they were made of paper. Words, can't really describe the carnage.
Guess this is what happens when you park on the lawn:
This was taken at my friend Angie's house. Her beach (about 20 - 30 feet deep) was totally gone - covered by massive waves.
This is our neighbour's house two doors down This 50 year old tree was stuck on another tree across the driveway and the light post.
Wow.
Our neighbour in the front - that spruce was a goner.
Tuesday was still incredibly windy, with gusts averaging 70 km per hour. The wind didn't settle until Tuesday night - thank goodness!
It's now Thursday at 5:20 p.m. and for the first time in four days I think I can see a crack of sunlight through the clouds. It can only get better from here.
