New Traditions

I feel like I've been behind the eight ball this year when it comes to Christmas. I've hardly made a dent in the Christmas shopping, the decorations inside the house weren't up, and we didn't even have a tree.

Well, we rectified the tree situation late Saturday night.  By Sunday afternoon the kids were begging me to decorate the tree.  Now as I'm sure you already know, I'm a wee bit - ahem - controlling when it comes to my Christmas decorations. I've told the kids on numerous occasions that only Mummy gets to decorate because I don't want anything to happen to my special ornaments.  I even went so far as to buy them their own tree so that they could go hog wild decorating that instead.

Oh yes, I'm THAT type of anal.

Well there must have been something in the air this year, because once we dragged all the Christmas totes upstairs the carnage began.  At first I was cringing every time one of the kid's pulled out another ornament.  But then something happened....

I relaxed.

Shannon kept "ooohing"  and "aaaahing" over how pretty / sparkly / beautiful the ornaments were.  Quinn was focused on: "who gave us this ornament Mummy?  Where did this one come from?" And Aidan played the role of organizer and lined all the ornaments up in a row for me to hang.

The tree was decorated beautifully, no ornaments were broken, and no children were harmed during the entire process.

It went so well that I said to the kids, why don't you go decorate the banister this year.  And you know what?  They did a fantastic job.  They remembered every detail from previous years, right down to the fake poinsettia flowers threaded through the garland.

Hmmm.... I think perhaps we've started a new tradition in our house.
